TeamSat was created by John O'Nolan in 2020, following the journey of building an international remote team at Ghost. Today there are more remote teams than ever, but back when we started there were vanishingly few. While there are a huge number of tools out there for remote teams to manage code, design, documents and communication — we found none to manage our most important asset: people.
For a decade we cobbled together spreadsheets for payroll in one place, personal records for team member details in another, a timezone sharing app in a third, expenses in a 4th, and a complex+fragile process for making payments. When your team is all in one country there's HR software to take care of all these things, but with a team spread all over the world it was a very manual effort.
As we passed around $2.5M/year revenue and 20 team members, we couldn't take it anymore - we needed a better system. So, we sat down and looked deeply at the patchwork framework of tools that had evolved from a decade of running an international remote business. TeamSat is the product that was born out of that process, and represents the tool wish we'd always had.
If only TeamSat had existed when Ghost started, we'd have saved thousands of hours stress and frustration trying to figure out how to make remote work, work.
So, the ideas turned into a new product. One to help founders contracting teams from all over the world, trying to build companies just like Ghost, Buffer, Basecamp, Todoist, Help Scout, Wistia, and HotJar. Companies which reflect modern workplace values, founded on freedom and responsibility.
